This story’s hero, Ember, faces not only a horrific series of attacks, but a worse series of revelations about her real identity. As the story is told in the first person, we learn each emerging truth as Ember does. For her and us nothing is what it seems. This layering of violence, emotion, and a deeply compromised reality makes this a compelling dive into the supernatural. Our engagement with Ember would have been stronger if Act 1 had been given over more to her earlier normal life. We’re thrown immediately into her struggle against occult surprises at every turn. By seeing and sympathizing with her as a normal young woman we’d have felt even deeper the onslaught of occult forces.
That aside, the portrait of ruthless evil in the book is very powerful. It overwhelms, exploits, and physically and emotionally ransacks its victims. This is very convincingly and chillingly portrayed. I was very drawn into seeing how Ember would fare against such a horrific fate.

I read this story (about the length of a novella) in one long sitting, and it's definitely packed full of interesting ideas, action, and mystery so that you keep turning the pages. The overall concept involves a mix of Celtic folklore, magic, and New Age-ish reincarnation that's pretty interesting. I really like that this fantastical mystery unfolds bit by bit until you get the full picture of what's going on, and you learn from inside the main character's head as she too figures out what's happening to her.
Ember herself is a likable-enough character to root for. Her sister Becky is a little flat but a good authority figure. The bad guy is appropriately evil and creepy. Matt and Izzy were easily my favorite characters, and their story involves a really cool twist that made them that much more interesting. (Honestly, I would happily have read THEIR story more than Ember's.)
However, there were several glitches in the book that kept me from really, really enjoying this story. It often felt like the author knew what she wanted to say but didn't convey it very clearly - especially when different planes of consciousness were used. The timeline moves really fast and doesn't dwell enough on some important parts, for example transitioning way too fast into the climactic fight at the end. It feels very jumpy. Ember's sudden flare-ups of rage are also really weird - aimed at everyone from her sister to the love of her life/lives. And, even though Ember and the reader both think she's an adult, it suddenly turns out that she was 16 when she "died," which adds a lot of confusion about the love interest aspect of the story and about how old she's ever been in general when all these memories resurface. Mostly, a lot of things just felt rushed.
As for the writing itself, the book is relatively typo-free, which is nice and helps you read without getting hung up on goofs. The language used feels comfortably YA or NA, not too difficult, and accessible for all readers.
Give it a try if you like mystical, kind of scary, kind of romantic fantasies with a girl at the center.
Interesting premise. Good characters. It makes me want to read a prequel because this could have an epic back story. Great debut book.
If you love to read a book that you can't put down, like I do. Read this book! It is great, kept me wanted it to go on! Looking forward to the next book in this series, as I will be buying that as soon as it comes out )
Easy reading! Can't wait to read the next book
I was caught up in the plot from the beginning, questions popping into mind from the gitgo. I was very pleased to find those answers as I continued to read this awesome story. It has imagination, action, romance, and fantasy!!!! I just wish it didn't take so long to get future books. When I finish one, I want to move on to the 2nd and third. I am sure that this is an author that will make a name for herself as a writer of fantasy and imagination in future books!!!!!
Great story!. In this first book, young collegiate Ember discovers that her life is not a boring as she thought. She discovers a past life, a star crossed love, and a destiny. While discovering all these secrets about her life, she discovers a strength within herself that will only grow in upcoming novels. Ember has a back story that was touched on in this book yet not fully revealed this first book. The author gives enough details to support the story as it has been unveiled thus without giving the entire story away too soon. I look forward to seeing it revealed layer by layer as the subsequent book(s) come out. Can't wait to read more from this author.
Dusgadh is the amazingly unforgetable story of Ember Malloch, a young woman recovering from unspeakable tragedy and her journey toward self-actualization. The paranomal elements strengthen the book and encourage the reader the keep the pages turning . The writing is warm, strong and descriptive and the pathos, truth and fantasy are real. The characters are well developed and I look forward to learning more about them in future books. An excellent thought-provoking read... can't wait for the sequels. Highly recommended.
