I have to agree with another reviewer that getting through the first few chapters was difficult, to be honest if I was not enthralled with this series and the overarching storyline, I might not have finished it.The "hero" of this novel came off as somewhat stalkerish and borderline rapist IMHO, it took over half the book before I came to like him even a little. I see very little difference between date rape drugs and using magic to do much the same thing (it is much more complicated than that but these were the feelings at the time I read it).
This tale of Christine and Kalen while eventually DOES become a great story seemed to spend a lot of time pushing my buttons about things you DON'T do in a novel.
Distastefully overbearing and arrogant hero, heroine who just swoons at his touch, etc BUT the thing that bothered me the most was her subtle insertion of her pet causes into the novel (I HATE THAT) I could care less about the author's feelings about pollution, global warming, logging, etc but you will get a taste of her pet causes while reading.
So why am I rating this book 4 Stars when I disliked so many things? The story. You can take a good story and get away with a ton of things with me and this IS a great story, could have been told better, but it was a great story and fed into the overarching story very well. I did not grab this book because I wanted it so badly, I bought it because I was already addicted to the Immortals series and the story of the brothers. This may have been one of my least favorites but thats like saying I prefer chocolate ice cream, other flavors are good, but I have a favorite.
This book was my least favorite in a series of great books, not a bad book, just not as good as the others BUT still this was a great story, this is a great series and I recommend all of the first 5 (I have to wait to see if I want the 2 last ones by this same author with a different storyline.)

I got hooked on the Immortal series with the first book from Jennifer Ashley. The series follows four immortal magic wielding brothers in their fight to save their insane younger brother and the world. Tain (the young insane brother) was tortured for seven hundred years by a demon that each brother has faced, fought and lost to in the past. The demon (who has a large list of names from different cultures) is using Tain to help end the world, and the brothers must join forces with the Coven of Light witches to stop them. This is the third book in the series, and its getting good people! I`d recommend this book to anybody! Spoiler alert! Tain and some of the side characters have their own books/ stories too! Read them a get hooked!
I loved Kalen's story. He and Christine were made for each other! The twists of the story kept me on my toes, despite the fact that I had read this once before, years ago. I was so happy that Kalen & Christine helped one another heal from hurts in their pasts.
I would *absolutely* recommend this series to anyone who loves some mystery & magic with their romance! ☺
Getting past the first few chapters of The Awakening was difficult for me. Pure erotica makes me extremely uncomfortable (okay, it just plain embarrasses the heck out of me), and I was pretty sure that's where this book was heading. Not a promising start.
A few more chapters in, and I found myself hooked on a very engaging storyline. Our heroine, Christine, is a water witch with her magical powers linked to all things of beauty; art, music, sensual love. When she gives, she gives so completely, she loses herself in the magic. In many ways it makes her a bit naïve and vulnerable, she knows it, and has been hurt by it before. Regardless of her own traumatic experiences, she has agreed to help the Coven of Light find one of the Immortal warriors, Kalen, and bring him into the fight of good vs evil, light vs dark. Find him she does, in a lonely castle in Scotland, in the arms of a beautiful, cold and manipulative, half-sidhe.
Sparks fly from the beginning when Christine meets Kalen, the lust is instant, and when they first make love, Christine, true to her magical nature, holds nothing back, giving Kalen everything she is, and pretty much shatters everything he has ever believed in. She becomes his emotional muse, giving him the ability to put his own heart and soul into his art. Kalen can't, and won't, let Christine go, and is determined to keep her with him always.
Quite simply, as a love story, it is terrific.
Naturally, true love is never without problems. There is "The Calling", which Kalen has (for his own reasons) no intention of answering, Christine's promise to the Coven of Light to bring Kalen to them, and finally, Kalen's former lover, the vindictive and nasty Leanna, using death magic against both Christine and Kalen to further her own agenda. Add Demons, the insane Immortal Tain (in a continuing role), some vicious Unseelie hordes, and some selfish and apathetic Gods to the mix, just to complicate things further.
Good writing, great action, no loose threads to drive you nuts.
To sum it all up "The Awakening" has it all. A terrific love story, an emotional awakening, a glorious adventure, heroic fight scenes, sacrifice, redemption, a strong ending. I am very, very glad I plowed past those first few embarrassing chapters (my issues might not be yours, so take that with a grain of salt).
NC-17 for strong sexual content. No torture scenes this time (thank you).
