In 1518 Sir Michael Devereaux is sent from Ireland to the Tudor Court to participate in the annual Order of the Garter tournament. At about the same Michael arrives, Princess Renee de Valois of France is forced to go to the Tudor Court to spy on King Henry VIII.
Soon after their separate arrivals, Renee hears of a plot to kill the monarch and that is followed by several murders. Cardinal Wolsey asks Michael to investigate the homicides. As Michael begins to connect dots between England, the Vatican and Ireland, he leaves out one key mark from his past until he is injured and he suffers from ugly visions of murder. He soon fears for his sanity as he ponders a supernatural killer while falling in love with Renee who reciprocates; but neither trusts the other leaving both vulnerable to a clever killer.
This is a fascinating spin on the reign of Henry VIII using real events to bring alive the aptly titled tale. The action-packed story line combines a whodunit with supernatural implications and a romance starring two wonderful protagonists. However Michael makes ROYAL BLOOD brisk as he fears he is going insane between his nightmares and his paranormal conclusion as to what is killing the blue blooded regal retinue.

I had never read anything by Rona Sharon before so I didn't know what to expect. Wow was I impressed. I really loved this book. Set in Henry VIII's court, with a vampire twist. You'll love this book. It's not the same old story line with most books of this period in Henry VIII court. I wanted to read it every minute I could spare. I've read alot of books and not many of them made me want to read them straight through. There is some steamy scenes you'll enjoy as well.
The story begins in Ireland as Michael Deveraux trains for the annual Knights of the Garter Tournament to be held in England. His lord, the Earl of Tyrone also known as the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland sends Michael in his place to court. The Earl's health is failing therefore he cannot participate in the tournament. Since Michael is his legal heir , he will have to be the one to take part in the tournament and thus gain glory for the Earl of Tyrone who is a member of the Order of the Garter. Meanwhile in France, Princess Renee de Valois daughter of King Louis XII is caught in a compromising situation with an Italian artist she is in love with. She is brought abruptly before King Frances I and Cardinal Medici. They give Princess Renee an ultimatum she can either marry the Duke of Soubise whom she despises or she can go to England on a special mission for them. Her lover the Italian artist Raphael will remain in prison until she returns from her mission. The stakes are high, however; for if she should fail she will die. Renee agrees to their deal but not before she has their promise in writing that they will honor their word to her regarding Raphael as well as returning some land holdings that were taken from her.
Once at court, Michael tries to establish himself in the palace but he is a newcomer and things do not work out as anticipated. He makes an enemy of one of the king's courtiers but also makes powerful friends. In the undercroft of the king's palace , Michael overhears a plot to assassinate King Henry VIII. Princess Renee, who recently arrived from France also overhears the assassination plot. Michael notices Renee nearby and wonders who the beautiful and mysterious woman is and what she will do about the information they just heard. Michael is enamored with the princess from France and even knowing she is off limits to him, he still tries to win her favor. Renee is similarly attracted to Michael and enjoys their verbal sparring but will not admit she has strong feelings for him. Her mission must come first and becoming involved with Michael jeopardizes her chances of success.
Michael is quite the sensation at court as his deeds win him the notice and admiration of King Henry. When one of Queen Katherine's ladies-in-waiting is found brutally slain, Cardinal Wolsey decides that Michael will be the one to investigate and apprehend the murderer. As Michael closes in on the culprit, he fears for Princess Renee as she could become the next victim. In his quest for answers, Michael learns the truth about himself. He is the only one who can stop a powerful enemy from destroying everyone he cares about.
This novel is fantastic . The author painstakingly researched Tudor England from the details of court life and the people to politics and religion as well as the archaic English spoken at that time. A list of sources used by the author is included at the back of the book. The plot combines history and romance with a paranormal twist. Some readers may not want to read this book because it includes vampires but it is still enjoyable and does not detract from the historical aspects of the story. The heroine Princess Renee is strong and intelligent and has to make some hard decisions that would impact Michael. Michael Deveraux is a good match for Princess Renee. I did not like some of Michael's actions in the first few chapters of the novel but he became a better person as the plot progressed.
